Think about light from anther way----artificial light and shadows

When I think about light and shadow,I will remember sunlight,windows,gap and so on.Those words exist in really light world.If some place do not have light or less light,how can I solve this issue?So think about light in anther way---artificial light and shadow.

The salon is a great example to explain artificial light and shadows.

According this project,there is only one small window in this building.In order to bring more light in this space .The designer use a great way to create light . The designer used different  white and grey paint to exaggerate the light and shadow.

The designer use white colour as sunlight through window into the space.Even this is fake light,people still feel the really light into the space.

Close to the nature

This week , I still research some family house design,such as plans,I suppose I can get some new ideas from designer.I find some common things about some plans,especially the house build in the lush greenery of the forest or hill.The designer  most focus on the environment, try them best to design the plan close to the nature,I think close to the nature is a human nature.Project 2 has the similar site ,why not use the prefect nature environment?So I analysis some plan in the nature environment.

 This build has the similar site with project 2 in the hill wiht many plants. The designer use the passageway to link each building,not only use the site ,but also give the client a chance to close to  the nature. This passageway not just a link simple,it also a good place to take a break for the client.Client not need go to outside to enjoy nature,just sit down in the passageway.

This project use the roof of the downstairs as the up stair's balcony, make the space interesting and get more outside space at the same time.

So I try to manage the function different in this way to let people close to the nature,I trying some bubbles.The aim of close to the nature.

I use the ground floor as the terrace.

Use the same way with above plan,but I separate the space of balcony .The outside space divide into two parts ,in order to let different people enjoy nature.

Finally, I developed no.1 plan,it will be in the next writing.

Reflection
Last week,I thought I get the important concept about design,not only for this project,but also for the design.No matter which kinds of architecture design ,we should focus on the function at first.It easy to say ,but when we do it according this new concept which must be a little different.Actually it is familiarized for us,but we did not think about this in deep. For example about project 2,I did function analysis as well,but I am not very clear about the purpose of this analysis.When I finish the function analysis,I think about the elevation .I did not realize the relationship between the function and elevation,even try to thought about how to make the architecture  interesting.I divide the link between function and elevation.After last week,I realized this was wrong way of the design,fortunately ,I get the right relationship between function and   elevation.That's why Joe emphasized the function many times.Every elevation of  architecture build on the perfect function.When we finish the function,the elevation will be appear.Do not seek the architecture interesting simply,even just a box which function has the reasonable,it still has a interesting elevation.

Function analysis:

 The family house can divided main parts:private area(Master bedroom including bathroom ,children bedroom,) and public area (Living dining area,kitchen).The private area should in quiet area,and the  use time normally in 11:00 pm to 8:00 am(nigh time).The public area needs enough lights,the use time normally in 8:00 am to 11:00 pm(daytime).

 

The function of adult should important than children and guest.

Those flow paths about initial plan in family house.I will develop those flow paths about plans.I prefer put public area in the ground floor and private in the first floor.

Reflection about Five points of a new architecture

This weekend,I read some books mentions Le Corbusier's five points of new architecture,even I already know his theory ,but I think I still need organized my reflections .

Even he defined this theory pass many years ,but the modern architecture built in the five points.

1. Buildings elevated on columns above the ground.

Let the living space far away from the wet environment and put the space use as connecting space. I suppose Corbusier 

has three reason support to this theory,firstly, the possible from technically (reinforced concrete structures).Secondly,get rid of wet and dark environment,let the resident have enough sun light.Lastly,ease the contradiction between space and function in the ground floor,because the ground floor gather many function.

2.Flat roofs able to support rooftop gardens.

The  flat roof replace slant roof.I think top roof is a perfect space,because the  sun light and good view .Secondly, the plant in the garden can be as protect layer in order to reduce the temperature of the concrete.With the development of architecture,above points lose the original meaning.

3.Flexible interior layouts with nonstructural partitions.
Because of concrete structures,the wall not need as the load-bearing wall,so the plane different with the classical architecture.As the result ,the "space" replace the "room".

4.Horizontal windows running the entire width of a space.
Horizontal windows could be let maximum sun light enters indoor space,I suppose horizontal window in the part of flexible interior layouts.

5.Lightweight nonbearing exterior walls.
If a architecture without flexible interior,it not has nonbearing exterior walls,the flexible interior is a basis of other flexible structure.But on the other hands,flexible not means no restraint.

I suppose flexible is the key word of the five points of a new architecture。

Project 2- initial analysis (weather:rain,wind,temperature )

Today,I collect some information about Winchester's weather.

From the chart of wind direction,SW and SSW wind account to 33.4% and 24.1% in Oct .

 Concentration of rainfall in Oct,and Dec.

The high wind Concentrate in Oct and Nov.

Project2---Initial analysis (Plant)

Second project site  in Winchester,in a conservation area,so I analysis plant in this area at first.

Many kinds of plant spread in this area,especially Yews and Beech spread in most space.

Yew: evergreen trees  and slow growth.
     dark green and dense.
     used for formal hedges and topiary.
Beech:large trees that may exceed 35 m in height and 1.5 m in diameter.
      Deciduous ornamental plants.
Holly: evergreen trees
       arbor/ arbet
       height:2-25m
       full shade to full sun
Sycamore: large deciduous trees
Hazel:  large of deciduous trees
Conifer: evergreen trees
         include cedars, Douglas-firs,Cypresses, firs, junipers, kauai,                    larches,pines,hemlocks,redwoods,spruces,and yews.

How to make the tiny space efficiency?
I think this is a key question about interior design,no matter the space big or tiny,the designer always think about this question,I collected some videos about how to make the space efficiency,especially tiny space.May be those video will give me some new idea in the future.

Self-summary for project 1

It’s time to summary for project 1 by myself,I think this is very important to do this summary.

After final feedback,I learnt some new things and realized what should I improve in the next project.From this project,I realized they are many different  ways to design something between postgraduate and undergraduate,I should use the new concept to think about design.During postgraduate,teacher request us focus on the research.I realized research very important when I finish first project.The more research,the more benefit for my project.Just as Joe said,you can not use some design aspects what you like,you should have evidence for those design aspect.So when we do the deep research,we can find more evidence about our project.

In the next project, firstly,I should improve my design language and try to think about overall project,do not just think some specific aspects.Secondly ,improve my computer skills especially Photoshop and Vray for sketchup .Lastly, I should make deeper research for the new project.
